They knew how to close up a wound, bind up to stop bleeding, uses of ointments for delivery of healing compounds, herbs and spices, and to soothe or mollify inflammation. My copy of e-Sword put the hebrew words for bind and mollify beside the wrong words (flipped them), but the definitions are there regardless. Wound management and treatment was not unfamiliar back then and God was able to use it as an illustration for tending to the putrifying nature of the nation's spiritual condition.
Herbs actually do exist that can clean up putrification, whether on the skin or in the gut.
