So today was "harvest the front patch and give it a haircut" day again. The pineapple weed is starting to suffer in our Okanagan summer heat. We've been in the low 30's Celsius for almost a week with another full week of it at least and promises of it getting hotter as we head into August. We'll have to see if we get too much more off that patch.
The prickly lettuce is still doing well, filled a total of 3 trays of it today, two are in the photos here. My daughter is making her first batch of wild lettuce vinegar tincture. We ordered in some 4oz bottles from ULine. The smaller the bottle, the less chance of introducing contaminants and reduced spoilage. These bottles will be ready for straining by next week.
The dandelion didn't give me as much this time, and got another tray's worth of mustard greens. I did up a small green salad tonight with some prickly lettuce, dandelion and mustard greens, with apple sauce, almonds and craisons.
Gathered more horsetail. It's drying on the stem out there! It was quite dry already as I laid it out on the tray. Horsetail has a number of medicinal uses, but is not a food.
Not pictured, is more lamb's quarters that came home today. I stuffed as much as I could into a grocery bag to help weed a small area near the arena gate. All my trays are full however! One small tray has some of the plantain that didn't quite dry from last week, fully. The saskatoon berries we laid out last week are almost dry. And I'll look at the horsetail tomorrow and maybe get it broken up into it's container to free up that tray.
Berry season is nearly on top of us now too and last year's 17 jars of chokecherry juice almost didn't do us till this year's growing season. I think I have two jars left in the freezer and hoping we don't run out. I need to thaw one out tomorrow.
Our store doesn't have lemon juice concentrate at the moment either, so we're dipping into my sumac berry juice in the freezer too. So I'll have to make more of that this year for sure!!
This is what weaning yourself off the grocery store looks like. It doesn't keep us out of the store for many things, but it does for some stuff so far, and maybe other stuff as I continue to learn about it. Need to get a used pepper grinder and see if it handles the curly dock seeds and if so, there's a ton of seeds out there ready to harvest if I can get them ground into paper bags!
Pineapple weed: replacement for chamomile and ginger, although you can find chamomile in the wild too.
Prickly lettuce: pain medication, sleep medication, digestive aid, salad ingredient, tea ingredient, to mention just a few uses.
Mustard greens: salad ingredient, tea ingredient, poultice, and a list of other nutritional/medicinal benefits.
Sumac Berry Juice: replacement for lemon with nearly the same nutritional/medicinal profile and usage. Gentler lemon-like flavour without the bite.
Horsetail: various medicinal uses.
Dandelion: Nutritional and medicinal superfood, can replace coffee if you drink coffee (boil the dried, crushed root), salad ingredient, tea ingredient, tincture is a digestive aid (bitters), just to name some of it's uses.
