Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has expanded its presence in the air cargo sector, increasing its fleet from zero to five aircraft in 21 months. The company launched MSC Air Cargo in October 2022 to strengthen its global logistics network across road, rail, air, and sea.

Even after almost three months, the new Italian right-wing government has still not succeeded in bringing about the promised asylum turnaround. Italy is, as ever, inundated by masses of illegal immigrants who are being landed by numerous “rescue” ships. The facts are that contrary to Italian Interior Minister Piatendosi’s claim that the number of Mediterranean migrants has fallen in the first two months of government, Interior Ministry statistics show that since Meloni took office, migrant boat arrivals have risen massively compared to the same period last year.

Meloni’s government will soon force NGO ships flying flags from countries like France, Germany and Norway to accept the migrants they pick up in the Mediterranean Sea. Italy’s council of ministers was to approve on Dec. 28 a draft security decree that will include a new Code of Conduct for those NGOs and accelerate the processing of asylum requests. One of the big changes the new right-wing government in Rome plans to introduce is that migrants taken on board an NGO boat in an alleged search-and-rescue operation will be required to declare if they intend to file an asylum request once in Europe. If this is the case, the country under whose flag a given ship is sailing will be required to take in the asylum seekers and process their requests.

The new decree now prescribes further rules for civil sea rescuers. These are intended to limit the rescue operations. It makes it more difficult for rescue ships to land in southern Italy. The cabinet clearly wants to limit systematic rescue operations by NGO ships that bring migrants to Italy. According to media reports, rescued refugees should submit their asylum application on board the rescue ships, which should be accepted by the ship’s flag state.
