The only thing I would add to this is get comms (COMMUNICATIONS). 2 way Ham would be best, but at the very least get a good shortwave radio so you can tune into worldwide information -- you'll have no way to know what is happening if you do not because you think the news is skewed now? You ain't seen nothin' yet. There is a lot of information on shortwave out there but I am biased -- I highly recommend this inexpensive book to help you with the knowledge you need, help you in choosing a radio, and give you the frequencies to tune to no matter where you are (I am biased, of course, because I wrote it) . . .
