• Beyond the Checkout: Playing Shopkeeper with Geoguessr Free

    Ever wondered what it's like to manage a store? To curate the perfect inventory, understand your customers' needs, and navigate the ever-changing marketplace? Well, while you might not be stocking shelves in real life just yet, there's a surprisingly fun way to flex your business acumen… with Geoguessr Free.
    Wait, what? A geography game as store management simulation? Hear me out. While ostensibly a game about identifying locations from Google Street View panoramas, playing Geoguessr – especially the free version – can be a surprisingly engaging exercise in resource management, market analysis, and adapting to your "customer" base (in this case, your need for geographical clues). This isn't about memorizing every flag or landmark; it's about developing a sharp eye, interpreting your surroundings, and making informed decisions under pressure, skills essential for any aspiring store owner.

  • So April 6th was our first spring foraging run. We came back with a bit of yarrow, but not without gathering a full cloth grocery bag of fallen, still-green, fir sprigs!

    Then we spotted a Ponderosa pine with very loose bark layers. These layers are what I've been experimenting with as a cinnamon-like spice. Looking around at the base of a few pine trees reveals that the trees shed this layer regardless. We can either let it go to waste and become forest fire fuel, or we can do our part in reducing fuel for forest fires while also reducing our need to buy imported goods from overseas.

    Discovering that Lamb's Quarters are a spinach substitute whether raw or cooked, is another ingredient that doesn't need to be trucked the last mile if it is found growing nearby, or only the price of the gas spent to go get it, which for us, is equal to the cost of gas running to the store. Of course, the fewer runs to the store, the less gas spent. Money saved all around.

    Maybe this week I'll get around to trying out powdered pine bark in place of cinnamon in a cinnamon roll recipe. If it works, I'll share the recipe and call them pine rolls instead.

    We will be at the Vernon Wellness Fair April 11th and 12th, with a sniff sample available of Wild Apple Spice.

    If you live in the Okanagan, hope to see you at the fair, and we look forward to more foraging runs, workshops, etc, as the year progresses. Don't forget that we are available for various bookings this year. See the booking card below:

  • Here’s the actual, verifiable situation in Canada right now**—no speculation, just what’s been publicly documented.

    ---

    # 🇨🇦 Canada: Digital currency (CBDC)

    ### Current status

    * The Bank of Canada has **NOT launched a digital dollar
    * It has only done research and testing
    * As of recent updates, the project is actually being scaled back, not accelerated ([Bank of Canada][1])

    👉 Key point:

    * A digital Canadian dollar does not exist today
    * There is no launch date announced

    ---

    ### What they *have* done

    * Ran public consultations in 2023 to ask Canadians what they think ([Bank of Canada][2])
    * Studied:

    * privacy issues
    * how it would work technically
    * risks to the financial system ([Bank of Canada][1])

    👉 Important detail:
    Any actual launch would require approval from Parliament, not just the central bank ([Bank of Canada][3])

    ---

    ### Official stance (simplified)

    * “We’re preparing in case it’s needed”
    * “There’s no decision to create one”

    Some sources even note it’s been put “on the back burner” for now ([NerdWallet][4])

    ---

    # 🪪 Canada: Digital ID

    Canada does NOT have a mandatory national digital ID system

    What exists instead:

    * Separate provincial programs (like BC Services Card, Ontario Digital ID plans)
    * Federal-level ideas are still evolving and debated
    * Adoption is gradual and optional, not forced

    👉 There is:

    * No nationwide rollout
    * No requirement tying it to money or banking

    ---

    # ⏳ So is there a 2030 timeline?

    No—there is no official 2030 deadline in Canada for:

    * Digital currency
    * Digital ID
    * Or combining the two

    What actually exists:

    * Ongoing research
    * Policy discussions
    * Slow, cautious experimentation

    ---

    # 🧠 What’s really happening (in plain terms)

    Instead of a single plan, you’re seeing:

    1. “Wait and see” approach
    Canada is watching:

    * What other countries do
    * How technology evolves
    * Public reaction

    2. Contingency planning
    They want to be ready if:

    * Cash use drops a lot
    * Private digital money (crypto, big tech payments) takes over

    3. Political limits
    Even if a digital dollar were proposed:

    * It would be debated publicly
    * Laws would need to pass
    * It could be delayed or rejected

    ---

    # ⚖️ Bottom line

    * There is no confirmed timeline (2030 or otherwise)
    * Canada is not close to rolling this out
    * In fact, progress has been slower and more cautious than many people expect

    ---

    If you want, I can also show you what other countries (like China or the EU) are actually doing—those comparisons help put things into perspective and clear up a lot of the “global plan” confusion.

  • Coming up for air as I continue efforts on my textbook before the foraging season kicks into high gear! I realized I haven't posted any new blog articles for literally an entire month! Oops???

    This coming weekend, we are at Vernon Shoparama at the Vernon Rec Centre. We will be in the rec centre's gym. In April, we will be back at the rec centre for the Vernon Wellness Fair, and then at Maplefest downtown Kelowna the last saturday of the month.

    May's craft fair schedule has run off the rails, BUT. . . we end the month at our very first ever Ren Fair!!! As I type, Ashley is working on a leather corsette belt for me! Comparing apothecary outfits to 1850's bar tenders with the age if piracy, and in all three image searches, it was apparent that as an English rider, Ashley's outfit was prebuilt just riding her horse! She had made herself a waspy corsette a few years ago, and that completes her look. The Penticton Ren Fair is happening May 30th!

    Do keep tabs on our 2026 Where We'll Be card, and/or to the website calendar, clickable from the main menu bar across the top of my website.

    We've also discovered the wonders of turning pine bark into a spice similar to cinnamon, with a flavour profile similar to cinnamon as well. It lends the same flavour style to things like apple fritters, apple crumble, pumpkin spice blend, etc.

    We are changing up the tea packaging by the way! This is more cost effective for us, takes the same length of time to put together as the current packaging, but takes up less space, and is easier to use. Just keep the string for your own storage as you will need it to close the package. Wild Apple Spice is the first tea to use this packaging.

    With plants coming to life around the valley, now is the time to be planning for foraging workshops.

    It's going to be a knock-em-out year this year (on many levels)! Here's hoping if you live in the Okanagan, to see you around at various fairs we'll be at!

  • Failing exams or dropping out of college can feel like the end of the road—but it’s not. Many students in India face academic setbacks due to financial issues, personal challenges, or lack of guidance. The good news? You still have a second chance to complete your education and rebuild your career. One popular option is the One Sitting Degree, a pathway that promises faster completion of graduation.

    What is a One Sitting Degree?
    A One Sitting Degree is often described as a fast-track way to complete your graduation in a shorter time, especially if you have gaps in your education or unfinished studies. It is commonly associated with distance learning or credit transfer systems.
